Warcraft III
"A generation before the events of World of Warcraft begin… Cunning, sinister, and seemingly unstoppable, the demonic Burning Legion prepare to launch their long-awaited assault on the mortal world. Survival is a matter of strategy, as the Reign of Chaos begins…"
Warcraft III is one of my favorite RTS (real-time strategy) games of all time. The original game is Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, and the expansion to it is Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. Some of the best features of Warcraft III include: Four unique races, heroes, an awesome world editor, great campaigns with great stories, and multiplayer. Due to the world editor in this game, there are hundreds upon hundreds of maps for this game, some of which are truly amazing.
Price: $19.99 for each game.

The Battle for Wesnoth
Battle for Wesnoth is simply one of the best games out there today, and here's what this game is:
"The Battle for Wesnoth is a turn-based tactical strategy game with a high fantasy theme. Build up a great army, gradually turning raw recruits into hardened veterans. In later games, recall your toughest warriors and form a deadly host against whom none can stand! Choose units from a large pool of specialists, and hand-pick a force with the right strengths to fight well on different terrains against all manner of opposition.
Wesnoth has many different sagas waiting to be played out. Fight to regain the throne of Wesnoth, of which you are the legitimate heir... step into the boots of a young officer sent to guard a not-so-sleepy frontier outpost... vanquish a horde of undead warriors unleashed by a foul necromancer, who also happens to have taken your brother hostage... guide a band of elvish survivors in an epic quest to find a new home.
200+ unit types. 16 races. 6 major factions. Hundreds of years of history. The world of Wesnoth is absolutely huge and limited only by your creativity - make your own custom units, compose your own maps, and write your own scenarios or even full-blown campaigns. You can also challenge up to 8 friends - or strangers - and fight in epic multi-player fantasy battles"
There are so many things in this game, so you just have to try it out to see what it is like.

Warzone 2100
"Warzone 2100 is a real-time strategy game, originally developed by Pumpkin Studios and published by Eidos Interactive, now developed by the Warzone 2100 Project. Compared to other real-time strategy games, it has a greater focus on artillery, radar, and counter-battery technologies, more frequent in-game cinematic updates as game play progresses, a massive research tree, as well as a vehicle design system."
This is a very unusual, though very fun RTS game. Unlike other games of the same types, this game only has one faction to choose from, but this faction is very unique. You make your own units in this game to customize the faction to your liking, and there are lots and lots of combinations to choose from. This makes the multiple faction system unnecessary. There is also a huge research tree in this game which ensures that you won't run out of different ways to play this game each time you play it. Try it out for yourself, and see all of the awesome things in this game.

This is a pretty fun top down shooter with lots of different features. For one, it has loads of weapons, which makes the game quite interesting. Second, it has a great skill system where you can choose skills from skill trees that are under three unique skill types. Each one of these skills is unique, and can affect how you play the game. They also allow you to come up with your own strategies on how to play the game well, instead of just shooting everything in your sight like most other top down shooters. This game also has vehicles that you can drive around in and kill people with. There are also many custom maps in this game, and you can create your own maps which means that you won't get bored of continuously playing one map over and over. Try it out, and see if you like this game.

0 A.D.
Just a heads up about this game: It's still in Alpha 4, and a lot more polishing is needed on the game before it will come up to par with commercial RTS games. That being said, its still a brilliant game with quite a bit of potential at its current stage.
"0 A.D. (pronounced "zero ey-dee") is a free, open-source, cross-platform real-time strategy (RTS) game of ancient warfare. In short, it is a historically-based war/economy game that allows players to relive or rewrite the history of Western civilizations, focusing on the years between 500 B.C. and 500 A.D. The project is highly ambitious, involving state-of-the-art 3D graphics, detailed artwork, sound, and a flexible and powerful custom-built game engine."
The best thing about this game is that its open-source and completely free! If you want to play a more polished game, I suggest to wait until it comes out of the Alpha stage, however, if you want to see what it's like so far and how things are progressing, try the latest Alpha 4 (named Daedalus).

AssaultCube
In for some fast-paced action, shooting down your enemies, and gaining countless victories for your team? Look no further, for AssaultCube is here.
"AssaultCube is a FREE multiplayer first-person shooter game, based on the CUBE engine. Taking place in realistic environments, with fast, arcade gameplay, it's addictive and fun! With efficient bandwidth usage, it's low-latency and can even run over a 56Kbps connection. It's tiny too, weighing in at a lightweight 40 MB package available for Windows, Mac and Linux. On the correct settings, it can even run on old hardware (Pentium III and above)."
Trust me though, this is quite a fun game. There are many different modes available for you to play when you play online, and when you play offline. There are only a few weapons, but each can be used in their own unique style, and one can learn to be deadly with them. I personally prefer the carbine, since I'm very good with it. My praising of myself aside, give this game a shot if you're up for some team-based, fast-paced multiplayer action.
